Safety has always been at the centre of how we operate. As Network Rail's communications standards continue to evolve, organisations working within safety critical environments must ensure that the systems and processes used by their people support the highest standards of compliance, governance and operational assurance.
Earlier this year, MSSI completed the implementation of a Safety Critical Call Recording solution designed to support compliance with Network Rail standard NR/L3/OPS/301. The programme has introduced recorded calling capability for designated safety critical communications and established the supporting controls required to manage those communications appropriately.
Whilst the introduction of recorded calling technology was a key element of the programme, the project extended far beyond simply deploying a new application.
The implementation included:
This approach ensured that the solution was not only technically available, but also supported by the processes and oversight required for long-term adoption.
One of the key objectives throughout the rollout was to make the solution as straightforward as possible for frontline workers.
Following technical reviews and operational testing, MSSI selected Cisco Webex as the preferred platform due to its suitability for mobile deployment, existing familiarity within the business, and its ability to support the requirements of the safety critical communications standard. User guidance, administrator support and phased onboarding activities were introduced to help workers and operational teams adopt the new way of working successfully.
The rollout was deliberately phased, allowing teams to monitor engagement, provide support where required and ensure a smooth transition to the new process.
Successful implementation relied on close collaboration between technology, operational and health and safety teams.
From identifying users and planning deployment phases, through to onboarding support and governance arrangements, the project required coordination across multiple business functions. Local administrators were established within operational teams to provide ongoing support and ownership, helping embed the solution into day-to-day activities.
The introduction of Safety Critical Call Recording is ultimately about providing greater assurance around communications that play a key role in delivering work safely.
By implementing appropriate recording, retention and audit arrangements alongside user training and governance processes, MSSI has strengthened its ability to support compliance with industry requirements while maintaining a practical and user-focused approach for operational teams.
As industry standards continue to develop, we remain committed to investing in the systems, processes and people required to support safe and compliant delivery across the infrastructure sector. The successful implementation of our Safety Critical Call Recording solution represents another step in that ongoing commitment.
